Pass the Bacon

We actually don't call ourselves vegan, though we choose to eat mostly eat plants on a regular basis. And we're pretty "strict" about processed foods, refined foods, sweetners, etc... in our daily life. Just ask my mom, who no doubt does some inner eye rolling (lovingly of course) at our efforts to eat clean and whole foods the majority of the time.

And then days like today come along. With an all you can eat fundraising breakfast for the local volunteer fire department (mom was a volunteer server) and an evening birthday barbeque and mussel fest at the neighbors. I'm not a mussel fan. I'll take bacon thank you very much.

All told, a very un-vegan day. Tomorrow though, it's back to plants.

First of all, who doesn't love bacon?? It is probably the worst meat for you but it is so tasty. If I had to give up meat, which I could easily do, I would really only miss bacon.

Second, thank you for supporting your local fire department. My husband is on our volunteer department and they really do need to do fundraising in order to keep the equipment from falling to pieces, especially in smaller centres.

I hear you on this one. We ate lobster a couple times each year when we lived on Cape Breton and its been one of our fond memories of the eastcoast. But it isn't something we even desire out here on the west. I'm glad we lived in freedom with our diet/lifestyle rather than legalist.

When birthdays come around the birthday person picks the menu and we deal with it, and I usually throw in a big salad. But we just had our sons 13th on Friday and he picked Fettucine with homemade Alfredo sauce, garlic bread and baked Mocha Cheesecake. We napped, and grouched, and complained of yucky tummies, and our 7yo was up sick during the night. We never get those complaints with fresh veggie/raw meals!

We eat the same on birthdays - no holds barred, whatever the birthday person requests. We don't always feel so great after, like you say, but hey, it's a birthday!

I'm not a fan of steamed mussels either but when I lived on Cape Cod, I worked at a fish market and I was in charge of fish smoking. I would make the most amazing smoked mussels. Oh my gosh, they were so good. After I smoked them, I packed them in olive oil. So yummy!

It's always good to keep a balance. I don't have problems with my kids eating healthy food at home. But the challenge comes when we eat outside, be it events, family dinners, restaurants, etc. My 5yo never seems to make the healthy choices when we're out, even if it's the same food that I make home and he raves about it. Any comments on that? Add to that a comment I got once from a friend, that I need to give my son more of what other kids eat -aka junk- so that he doesn't ask for it, at least not in public!!
