I feel at home in the trees in a way that defies my prairie upbringing. Maybe because before they were farmers, my ancestors carved small homesteads out of primeval European forest in ages past. And even more recently lived in the woods.

An adventure-loving person, Teri lives for experiences. But as a gardener, community theatre member, and parent she values the rootedness and connection of "place". This desire to be both grounded - to build a home and commit to a particular place - and have adventures and unique experiences is a central tension for Teri.

The Northeast Kingdom is just 2.5 hours from Montreal. It's east of the main spine of the Green Mountain Range. Although the whole state feels like "the green mountains", the Northeast Kindgom, physiographically called the Northeast Highlands, is a more rolling terrain than the mountains to the west.

This past spring I went to visit and volunteer at a farm in New York. It was a spiritual retreat. I didn't know how desperately hungry I was for this kind of experience until I was there, feasting on it.

It is completely possible in Montreal to eat a wide variety of exclusively Quebec grown produce through the summer months.

I wasn't expecting this trip out west to be vacation. When our friends in Montreal found out we were traveling for 6 weeks I was clear that this wasn't a vacation, it was a trip.

If I could choose to be an expert in just one thing during this stage of our homeschool journey, I'd chose to be an expert in knowing my kids and building a better relationship with them.
