Having moved to the South Shore of Nova Scotia, I find myself reflecting on the evolving nature of winter—both in the environment and in my life. I’ve traded Quebec’s snowy, winter sport-filled landscapes and culture for milder, less snowy winters. While I anticipate missing the deep snow and exhilarating outdoor activities (especially in the mountains), I’m am hopeful about this new chapter, grounded in my deep satisfaction and love for my home and the people I share my life with here.

My children cannot un-belong to me with poor behaviour, lifestyle choices, or even heinous actions. They are always my children. And I will always be here for them. Their choices might move them “away” from me physically or relationally, but I will never disown them, they are part of me, always.

Sanctuary is the name of my parent's home on the LaHave River. Sanctuary describes both the soul of the place and the meaning of home. Home, not as a structure or a particular location, but as a place where relationships are built and sustained, where family can always find refuge.

It's taken me many years of adult life to feel comfortable with my own family's version of family vacation, which has been an evolving hybrid of traveling to visit family, camping and backpacking, and working roadtrips.
