For years I have wanted to host an online gathering to talk about ideas with other people. (I have so many ideas I'd like to discuss!) This winter I’m going to take action on that desire.
I’m going to host a salon around the topic of seasonality in our lives.
What does seasonal living mean to you? Do you try to live seasonally? How? What challenges do you experience in that? How do you deal with those challenges?
This topic is of interest to me because I am a seasonal person, on multiple levels. I’m always working out ways to lean into and honor seasonality, for my mental, emotional, and physical health but also as an expression of my spirituality and to nurture my sense of connection to the natural world.
I’m curious to learn from other people what seasonal living looks like for them.
I will be publishing a blog post/essay in the coming days on my response to seasonality, how I’ve attempted to “schedule” for seasonality in my life, and challenges with that.
But I want to publish this save-the-date, “sign up for a gathering” post first so that people have enough time to work it into their schedules.
Salon gatherings have a particular meaning and context and what I intend to do is not exactly a salon, as they were originally conceived and practiced, but I can’t think of a better word for it right now so I’m using salon.
Salons were social gatherings, particularly prominent in France during the 17th and 18th centuries, where intellectuals, artists, and political figures convened to discuss and exchange ideas. These events were often hosted by influential women, known as salonnières, who curated the guest lists and guided the conversations, thereby playing a crucial role in shaping cultural and political discourse. Salons facilitated the spread of Enlightenment ideas and provided a platform for individuals to engage in debates, share literary works, and foster intellectual networks. ChatGPT
To be clear, I’m not hosting a debate or a debate-like environment. But I am very open to the contribution and discussion of ideas that are different from mine. For example, different ways of thinking about seasonality. I want to learn from other people’s experiences (vs. theories) especially.
What does seasonality look like in your life? That’s what I really want to know.
I will be hosting the discussion and will come prepared with some questions but I don’t have an agenda, nor will I be teaching. My simple goal is to facilitate a conversation around a specific topic and learn from each other. That’s it.
The details on when and how I’m hosting this, and how to sign-up are on this google form.
In preparation for the salon I've published an essay introduction on my blog. Some foundations of Western cultural unseasonality: An introduction to seasonal living will get you introduced to the philosophical perspective I'm bringing to this discussion.
I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully having you join the salon.
