Classical Music Education

I'm ashamed to admit we don't own any of Beethoven's music. I discovered this fact yesterday when Laurent asked to listen to Beethoven. The kids and I have been listening to some of his symphonies and piano concertos (borrowed from the library ) as part of our music education. I am not a classical music lover so this has been a learning experience for me. But, to my delight, we all enjoy his music. So, yesterday when I discovered the only thing classical in our itunes library is Handel's Messiah I was somewhat embarrassed - for myself. I must not be a very well "musiced" person to not own any Beethoven. I intend to change that. If anyone has any recommendations for particularly good recordings of Beethoven's music I'd love to hear them as I'm set to buy some soon.

Welcome to the wonderful world of classical music! My favourite pieces by Beethoven would have to be:

Sonata for Piano NO.14 (Moonlight Sonata) Fur Elise (Mom used to play this all the time at home) Ode to Joy from 4th Symphony

But of course there are many other favourites to check out for classical artists.....Mozart (Eine Kleine Nachtmusik), Tchaikovsky (Waltz of the Flowers, etc.) and Schubert (Ave Maria). Since Christmas is coming up soon, an awesome Christmas Classical albumn I have is "Classic Christmas", which is one of my favourites at Christmas time.
Now I am playing classical music for our little one, as studies show it is relaxing for them in the womb. Smile. Enjoy, Melanie

Mel, thanks for the feedback. I am familiar with all the music you mentioned and another friend e-mailed me good recordings to check out.

We are slowly working our way through classical music. Slow as in we will cover different composers over the course of years. We started with Beethoven and we're listening to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker right now and we'll listen to Handel's messiah in a couple weeks. After Christmas I'll try to tie in our musical selections with some concerts we are going to.
