A Summer of Hiking

I'm still in denial about the end of summer. It doesn't help when fall is such a gorgeous season here in Nova Scotia (it makes up for the cold, wet, miserable spring). There are some days still hot enough for the beach. Who can think about autumn and the inevitable cold of the winter that follows on such days?

This weekend I posted A Summer of Hiking in Nova Scotia at our family's adventure blog.

You'll want to check it out if you have any interest in family hiking, enjoy nature photography, want to see where we went and what we saw this summer, or live in the Maritimes. So hey, that should cover all of you! I'm shameless, I know.

But really, if you live in Nova Scotia (I know a few of you do) you may want to read it. In that post I share some of our favorite (you'll notice I still spell like an American) and not-so-favorite trails we discovered this summer and give recommends for good beginner hikes.

I love hiking with my family. We are excited about our next move which is bringing us back to the mountains and much more hiking opportunities. Anticipating the winter snows that blanket Gaspésie for months and months we have invested in cross country skiis and can't wait to start pursuing this outdoor activity as a family.

But I'm still not ready to say goodbye to summer.

How about you? What family outdoor activity do you remember fondly from this summer? What are you looking forward to this winter?

I think you'll enjoy cross country skiing. We did this when we lived in the UP and had snow for much of the year! Our two were quite young and we rigged up a sled to pull them behind us.

It's so hard to say goodbye to summer! :( This fall I'm looking forward to going to the pumpkin farm with my family and taking long walks to enjoy the changing colors of the leaves.

We love to go canoeing although we only made it out a few times. We may still have some weekends left to pursue this interest. It is so peaceful. And as for winter we really look forward to snowshoeing. We always end up in the same place but this year I really think we should expand our range a bit. Nice thing about snowshoeing is there are no mosquitoes!

I seem to be the contrarian here. I can't wait for the summer temperatures and weather to leave us. It's been near impossible to do anything outside this summer and I wish for fall (or for my husband to have a job transfer to a cooler and less humid climate)! I am looking forward to spending time outdoors with my kids in long sleeves playing in the leaves with no mosquitos.

I've never lived as far south as you. Summer in Maine was never unbearable for more than maybe 2 days in a row and summer in most of Canada is never unbearable. I personally can't imagine living in a place where you don't want to be outside in summer. I'm a northern girl and our winters are long and cold. So I guess that's the trade off (smile).

We've had a few adventures this summer up in the near by mountains of Colorado, but we are looking forward to our big autumn family trip to the San Luis Valley in Colorado for hiking, camping, Sand Dunes, and hot springs. Having a younger means that our trips are shorter but even now he can go for six miles before being done. There is something about autumn trips that make them the best, I think, perhaps it is the light this time of year or just that it's the last one for a while but they always wind up being the most satisfying.

I LOVE autumn hiking. We haven't done many long autumn trips. A short backpack trip last October that felt like winter. But hiking this time of year is the most ideal temperature and bug-wise.

I'm going to agree with Jennifer and say that I can't wait for summer to go. Our good season is upon us! Texas has been unbearably hot this summer!

Hey Renee, it's been to long. I have only been able to read your posts, not a lot of time to comment these days. Thank you for the video blogs they are great.

I will definitely remember our camping trip as a family near Mackinaw and the Upper Peninsula this summer. The kids had a blasts. I'm ready for Autumn to begin. I am looking forward to taking some hiking trips this Fall with the kids.

Our springs are horrible, summer is short, but oh so lovely...and fall is downright dreamy. We are hiking, soaking in hot springs and embracing every second of fall. But, I am also planning our winter activities. We love cross-country skiing and I can't wait to get the boys on alpine skis this year.

You have to plan the activities early to make them happen. Especially if you need to make gear purchases. We decided at the beginning of this year that we would start skiing this winter coming up (backcountry cross country, transitioning eventually to backcountry alpine) with the kids. We started a savings envelope right away for the kids (they each had to contribute $$ to help). And then Damien and I worked our gear into the year's budget. As money was available Damien started buying the kids' gear on-line with end of last season sales. So we're all set for them! Now, of course the big ticket items - our gear.
