Last spring the kids and I took a pottery workshop/lesson at a local studio. The photos I took that day resulted in a request from the potter herself for a photo shoot of her pieces, to be featured on her own website. Taking pictures of beautiful pottery is a creatively rewarding project and I jumped at the chance. In return Lindsey gave our family another session in her studio. I love bartering!
In the fall the kids and I returned to get our hands dirty. Only this time I participated in the creativity and left the camera at home. It was so fun to play with the clay and create hands-on beauty, not just digital files. In December we returned to paint our pieces and they were finished the final firing the day before we left for Nova Scotia, early Christmas presents.
The kids each created two pieces; a hand sculpture (wizards and the pig) and a bowl on the wheel. I fashioned three cylinders (two flower vases and one votive candle holder) and a small bowl on the wheel. Our projects were largely inspired by this great resource Ceramics for Kids: Creative Clay Projects to Pinch, Roll, Coil, Slam & Twist.
If you'd like to see more of my pottery photography and check out Lindsey's beautiful work I encourage you to visit her lovely website The Mudroom Pottery Studio. Not all the photos on her site are mine but you might recognize the ones that are (many of them feature the really cute Tougas kids). If you're local I recommend, yet again, taking lessons or workshops from Lindsey. We have really enjoyed doing so. And who wouldn't appreciate such practical beauty in their kitchen?

my sam has always enjoyed pottery on a wheel. i have never had a chance to throw my own. husband has past experience and loves hand throwing. in fact, he wants to take it up again. we are working on making our own fire kiln in the side of the hill. hopefully this will be something we can do within the year. the wizards are too cool! fun!
I don't know what it is about the wizards but I love 'em. Maybe they could become part of a hand made fantasy chess set taking the place of the bishop.
