Pinky the Stuffed Cat

A couple months ago I saw the book Sock and Glove: Creating Charming Softy Friends from Cast-Off Socks and Gloves featured on a blog sidebar. I honestly don't recall the blog or I'd give credit where credit is due. 

I knew my kids would love that book and I was able to find it through our library. Score.

We keep a collection of old socks and worn out gloves for this very purpose - crafting them into toys. Sock and Glove is a great book to accompany such a collection. 

We borrowed it from the library for a couple weeks and there was a frenzy of stuffie sewing. The book calls them softies, we prefer stuffies. 

Laurent finished up his funky felt cat, a pattern not found in the book. He has since decided the cat wasn't worthy of prized real estate in his you-can-only-move-this-much toy bin. I admire his "know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em" mentality about his created toys. 

But Brienne is definitely not parting with her cat Pinky. A creation made by following a pattern in Sock and Glove, using a pair of Celine's old socks.

Brienne is so proud of herself and she did a great job of sewing most of this herself. Celine read the directions and helped with a few stitches. 

Of course a stuffie needs clothes. I helped Brienne sew a patterned fleece dress for Pinky but Celine decided Pinky needed something with a little more style.

She worked on this dress with matching hat (pattern not included in the book) as a surprise for Brienne and laid it out on her bed one night after Brienne had fallen asleep. Brienne found it first thing the next morning and was delighted. 

Celine also sewed a stuffie for herself. A little dog from a pair of extra white gloves we had in our aforementioned collection. She followed some basic directions from the book but took great liberties with the pattern and made major modifications. Kind of like her mom when it comes to cooking. 

I think if my kids can follow the directions (or choose not to) from the book it's probably a good resource if you're looking for some inspiration to sew easy stuffed animals with or for your children. This book would have come in handy last year when Celine made this sock monkey.
