Witnessing the four full moons of this summer was a highlight for me, in a summer of highlights.
June 2024, first full moon living at the Sanctuary
July 2024
August 2024 Waxing Gibbous, not a full moon (obviously) but one of my best moon shots from the summer
August 2024 Super Blue Moon at Hirtle's Beach, NS
September 2024 Super Moon rising, as viewed from Mont Royal in Montreal
For years I have wanted to experience more of the moon's beauty and become more aware and mindful of its cycles.
I want to know where and when I can expect to see it in the sky. I want my normal routines to include the observance and recognition of the moon as an integral part of my relationship with the natural world. I have pined for the unobstructed views of country skies to assist me in fulfilling that desire. And now I have that.
I hope I never take this for granted.
In August, Mom and I went to Hirtle’s Beach to witness the rising of the August Super Blue Moon. (That sure is a lot of qualifiers.)
Super, because of the relatively closer distance of the Moon to the Earth during this period of time. Blue because there were 4 full moons this summer season and the third moon of that quartet is called a seasonal blue moon. A blue moon also refers to the 2nd full moon in a calendar month which doesn't happen very often. Hence, the cliche “once in a blue moon”. This NASA article explains it all if you need more.
I took various photos and video footage of each rising full moon but August’s was the most spectacular coinciding with both high tide and the heart-pounding surf caused by post-tropical storm Ernesto in the North Atlantic.
As I talk about in my most recent YouTube release, I wasn’t able to do as much videoing or production in late summer as I would have liked. But I did manage to create a video sequence of the August full moon.
That sequence is the opener for this video below.
The rest of the video is me talking about happenings I had wanted to produce into video and factors that interfered with that goal.
Interestingly, while explaining why I’m not producing as much video as I’d hoped to, I show quite a few of the video clips I did take in late summer. Inadvertently producing a late summer video of life at the Sanctuary.
This video closes shop on my summer storytelling. Which is necessary seeing as we’re already two weeks into autumn.
After the travel and household comings and goings of late August through September I am aiming for a slow and observant October.
There is so much to witness in a new place, especially one as beautiful as this. I don’t want to miss a second of it.
