A Blogging Mama Does the Numbers

Although Damien is doing our taxes today and I'm working out our summer budget (it ain't pretty), those aren't the numbers I'm referring to. This blogging/photography hobby of mine can take control of my time very easily if I don't guard myself. I'm fairly certain I'm not the only mama with this problem.

My Post Ideas list has started to consume too much mental energy and I've begun stressing about all the things on that list. (This is also why I don't write lists of things I want to do before I'm 30-something - that would drive me absolutely bonkers!) Great ideas I planned to write about or had already started writing about and have been sitting "unpublished" in the queue for months.

So last night I deleted as those partial posts - how to make a knotted fleece blanket (that was going to be good), roman studies, tintin comics and more. And this morning I burned the list. That feels much better.

But really I can't be without a list of some kind, so here's my new one:

1. Number of hours I have each weekday to spend writing - period. 2. Number of photos I want to upload to my gallery each week. More is not necessarily better. By the way, the gallery viewing was updated to a "slideshow" type format. Just click on a photo in one of the categories and you can go forward right from that photo.
3. Number of children entrusted to my care whom I am committed to educate, love and feed each and every day. 4. Number of cores in my computer processor (according to my techie husband) to support this photography addiction passion of mine. 5. Number of photos I plan to upload to my Flickr account each week. 6. Age of my youngest child. (See number 3.) 7. The time I really must be up and out of bed by each morning, earlier would be better. 8. Age of my middle child. (See number 3.) 9. Age of my eldest child. (See number 3.) 10. The time I need to go bed each weekday night.

Anybody else have lists they'd like to share? How do you keep your blogging in check?

Renee, I love your list. I make lists all the time - clean out the fridge, wash laundry, vacuum the 2nd floor, etc. They help me to stay focused and feel like I have accomplished something on a day that I may not feel that way if I wasn't able to cross some small task off. But I have never made one quite as poignant and practical as this one. My husband tells me I need to make a list of goals, not just things to do, because it will really improve my effectiveness. You have given me the push I needed to make a list of things to focus on, not just "goals." A focal list. I'm doing it, and I'll blog on it soon! Thanks!
