Saturday Staycation at Mackworth Island

There's a sweet little island near Portland, ME that probably everybody else who lives around here has already been to. This weekend was our first trip. No ferries (it's reached via a causeway) and no fees but limited parking and controlled access. If you decide to go you should call ahead.

We didn't know that but just as we pulled up another car was leaving out of the full little parking lot. We scored a place to park (and access to the island) and had a lovely picnic on Casco Bay and walked the path around the island afterwards. A vigorous hike it was not but it was a perfect afternoon outside, an actual sunny day in this second straight month of rain.

We ended our near-home vacation day with supper at our all time favorite Portland restaurant. The kids even pitched in so we could all eat miso soup, maki (sushi rolls) and tempura.

We've had a busy month. No one's been ill and no disasters have occurred but pretty much everything else has. I had no idea how much we needed this day till we were actually away from it all. Swinging, snuggling, laughing, walking, running, eating and hearing our kids say over and over again "this was such a great day".

Kristin, we buy a lot of our clothes from a local Patagonia outlet (much discounted prices). I wrote a bit about it here. The only clothes we buy for our kids are these type - very functional for home, play and the outdoors. The rest of their clothes, girls dresses and such, are hand-me-down and gifts from grandparents.

Nice! I'm glad you all got a chance to go out there - it's one of my very favorite places. :)
