Glorious Fall

I'm so glad it's not raining this week. I was kind of blue last week and I think the weather really affected that. But this week has been a different story. The kids and I have made time in our days to get out and enjoy the sunshine, blue sky & leaves this week. Monday was Halloween and we discovered the local playground, Tuesday morning Celine had her riding lesson - outside of course.

Bates in FallYesterday we walked to Bates college and the kids had a blast (mommy included) playing in the leaf piles. Unfortunately, our house doesn't have enough trees around it to get a large gathering of leaves on our lawn - we miss that from our old house. So, we have to go other places to enjoy fall leaves. Bates has lots of beautiful huge oaks, maples and other trees that provide a lovely leaf carpet in fall. There are still many leaves on the trees as well. I couldn't take any photos - still no camera but I found this photo on-line to give an idea of what it looks like.

This morning we went for a fall hike at Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary . Thorncrag is only 5 minutes from our house and is a 310 acre forested sanctuary within the city of Lewiston. Next time I need to give us more time. We had planned one hour but ended up being there longer. The kids love being out in the woods. Their favorite play is to pretned house. Setting up bedrooms, kitchens etc. We've been learning about pioneer life lately and enjoyed reading the history of Thorncrag, which was pioneered by the Thorne family 200 years ago. As we were walking through the woods Laurent kept pointing out where the family's house or garden may have been. The leaves were beautiful - many on the ground and still in the trees. Mostly brown, orange & yellow against the backdrop of grey branches, green mosses and evergreens - breathtakenly beautiful. And then that smell of fall leaves - ahh it was a lovely morning. We came home and had apple cinnamon pancakes for lunch - very good morning all around.
