Talk about a pleasant surprise at FIMBY yesterday when all the no-nonsense mothers came out of the closet, so to speak. I feel like raising a rolling pin in Radical Homemaker fashion.
We need to unite or something. Form a union, NNM (No-Nonsense Mothers).
It was nice to hear all your voices, thank you for contributing. It was kind of fun to talk about something "on the edge".
Yesterday, while the focus here was on (how not to raise) picky eaters I posted a video at Simple Homeschool of my homeschool planning and record keeping for the upcoming school year.
Video is fairly new to me and it's a communication medium I want to explore more. I love to teach, I love to share what I know and use, and sometimes video is just the best way to get certain ideas across.

Of course when you produce video, just like writing or photography, there's a lot of editing behind the scenes. So today I want to share some of the edited parts, the outtakes, from my video yesterday at Simple Homeschool.
I'm calling it The Good, The Bad, and The Embarrassing. In making the video for SH I had to edit out some good chunks because I didn't want to lose the audience in a super long video.
Specifically, I talk about what I did for last school year (2010-2011) and how I kept things super-simple during our move. I also fill in more details to this year's planning and record keeping system (to read what I've done in years past for record keeping and assessment see this portfolio post).
After that part there are a few funny parts. Like where I totally space out on what I'm saying and, um... well you'll just have to watch.

Just a heads up that during the next month, once I wrap up the vegan kitchen posts (last one next week), I will be sharing more of our homeschool plans and curriculum choices for this school year. I'll be doing both video and written posts. And I'm really excited about it.
Lots of good stuff going on with the kid's learning and mine. I can't wait to share!

This is so funny. The way the actual video went on SH I just thought you were perfect at pulbic speaking. It is so nice that you can share the not so perfect stuff too. Love it.

The "perfect at public speaking" part is downright laughable, which is why I shared these outtakes (smile).

The outtakes cracked me up! It reminds of my own outtakes in high school. I was on a team that was going to be in a public speaking competition. Our teacher video-taped us so we could analyze ourselves. Well, it turns out I'm totally a bobble-head doll. My head just bounced around the whole time. It was hysterical! My teacher would stop me and start me over and over and over again, because I simply COULD NOT hold my head still. :-)
I have to agree with Emily about your arms -- I was totally distracted by your biceps! Wow!!

Love this video! It's so nice to see you and hear you this way...and I very much look forward to seeing more videos...
It will be nice to see the planning sheets.... Do you use curriculum or just go about it following your (their) interests?...
In the past for my other children I always used curriculum but with these last little boys( special needs) of ours we mostly go at it pretty loosely and follow their interest...
On another subject...I have yet to try some of your yummy recipes I see on here...it's been on the 30 here in Red Deer and I am not cooking these days :)

Thanks you Renee! It's so fun to actually watch you! We're doing a different thing with homeschooling this year and your words remind me that our home school plans are all so diverse because we are doing what's best for our family at the moment. We all have our unique paths! I look at others and say, "I could be doing that!" I have to remind myself that we are doing enough.

Love the video! I spent the first couple minutes marveling that seeing a video of a person is so very different reading her words. You're so living and breathing and moving and gesturing! I loved the outtakes, especially the last one.

Oh Christie, I am "so gesturing". I use my hands so much when I talk. I'm also loud, often talking too fast and saying too much and having to backpedal... which is why I love the editing part of writing.

I liked the videos too. I have to admit at first I was like nooo. I don't always like videos on a blog I read regularly. I guess it sort of ruins the voice for me, it's silly I know, it's their voice after all. I guess it's like seeing a book in movie form and it's just not how you pictured it, but that was so not true with your video. Lovely :) I look forward to more.
Also, I love your system. I feel like it would work well with the more relaxed style we have because we could fill it in as we go.

I liked the video Renee. I'm interested to hear if your moves mean changes in your planning, record-keeping, curriculum changes, etc in order to keep in line with different homeschool laws. We live in a heavily homeschool regulated state, so I'm always interested in what others have to do to keep up with the law.

Renee, I am curious to know if you record all this because you have to show something to the state. If you would not have to, would you do the same?

I would do something similar regardless. I am a written record keeper. I kept baby calendar and baby books of what the kids were doing and how they were growing. I kept memory binders when they were "preschoolers". These binders are an extension of that. I will say though that this year, with our move to QC I am keeping track of things a bit more formally than I have in years passed. I will be talking about that this month here at FIMBY. But the black binder I talk about in the video is something I've always done, even before they were school age.

LOVED this post, Renee! I especially liked the idea of keeping the family values and school goals right in the cover. I used to do this years ago, and had wandered away from that... that'll be my weekend project! Oh, and if we're all being so honest, I was actually envying the dress! :)

Yes, I think that part is important For all of us that are doing our best for our own children to remember. Record keeping (organization in general, lol) is the part I struggle with the most so it was very welcome information you shared in these videos. And as for the outtakes - at least you never forgot your name. I have done that once or twice when speaking publicly. Loved the videos, and it was great to see your smiling face and put a voice with it. Take care.

Oh my gosh, the end was so funny! I recently put together a video and it was like 20 second clips smushed together because I would lose my train of thought anything longer than that! Heehee! Bella is three this year and I'm thinking it might be time to start a memory binder for her activities. At least it will get me in the habit early! Love your videos. Can't wait to see more. :O)

Loved this, Renee. Especially seeing the "real" in the out takes. You're so cute. And, I'll say it again, you've got killer sculpted arms! (Arm envy here.)
Anyhoo...I think using this media of video is such a great teaching method. It's one thing to read about something, to see pictures and descriptions, but it's another thing to hear someone's voice, their expressions, the tone. You really get it, especially if you are a visual and auditory learner. I'd love to see more of this from you. You have so much goodness to share.
Thinking of how I organized our homeschool, as far as planning and paperwork, I would say I we match up pretty well. I love binders and I just couldn't survive without having things layed out, handy, before my eyes, accessible. The same thing for my kids. I like the idea of letting them have ownership, filing in their best and favorite work. This is helpful info. I know others will appreciate your efforts in sharing all this.
