Blogging is something I stumbled into almost 9 years ago. Since that time, why I blog and how I blog has obviously evolved.
FIMBY remains my writing crush and as our kids get older, and with our current family dynamic, I now have more time for writing than I ever have. This is a happy thing for me.
Extra writing time hasn't necessarily meant I publish more blog posts though, it means the posts have gotten longer. I have time to craft each post with writing and photography. It means I have time to both tell a story and go as deep as I like with an idea.
This kind of blog reading isn't for everyone. Indeed, I don't have a "big-time blogger" readership but that's not my goal. Writing my heart and serving those who show up here is my purpose in blogging.
I love digging deep into an idea but I miss the fast turn around of short-post blogging.
Facebook to the rescue.
Over the past couple of years as Facebook has become more popular with the blogging crowd I have regularly evaluated my own tentative relationship with Facebook. I have watched other blogs establish Facebook pages and scratched my head at what seemed like the extra time commitment and work involved.
I continued to use my personal Facebook page to connect mostly with my extended family but remained uneasy about establishing a Facebook page for my blog.
Then early this summer, while we were traveling, I really wanted a way to share little snippets of our journey and thoughts. My blog sat pretty quiet because I didn't have regular writing time but I wanted to share beauty and connect with people the way I do on my blog.
And for the first time I started to see a purpose for a FIMBY Facebook page. A place where I can micro-blog.
Facebook works for a lot of people, probably even a lot of FIMBY readers. It's just taken me a while to figure out how to get Facebook to work for me.
Once I got clarity on my purpose for a Facebook page I was excited to start one.
So, that's the news today. FIMBY is now on Facebook.
Instagram photos of life happenings around FIMBY's theme of family togetherness, the outdoors, freedom in education and livelihood, beauty, relationship and community, faith, and simplicity - with an emphasis on adventure, creativity and health. So you know... FIMBY type photos.
Interesting links (but not too many). I used to regularly feature links at FIMBY but I just don't have the writing bandwidth for that anymore. Too many of my own ideas clamor for publication and the time required to write those makes it hard to share links (though I share links other places, see social media below).
Micro-blogging when I'm not in my usual writing groove. When we're traveling and adventuring my routine gets kinda ruffled, but I still want to share snippets of beauty and thoughts. Facebook seems perfect for that.
Links to my blog posts. I will link to every blog post at FIMBY Facebook. If you are a regular Facebook user you might appreciate these updates.
Inspiring ideas and quotes. So often I will read something that someone else has written and want to share it. Facebook seems like a good venue for that.
Book links and mini-reviews. Still thinking this one through but books are once again prominent in my life, after a dry season moving to a French reading culture (i.e.: no library service). I love reading and I love to share what I'm reading.
Newsletter links. Did you know I publish a weekend newsletter? It's a recap of FIMBY posts from that week with a bit more story, and it's pretty. If you sign up it's delivered to your inbox but I think I will also link to it at Facebook.
Announcements, about... things. The category otherwise known as miscellaneous.
Other places you'll find me:
I use Pinterest as a bookmarking site for visual ideas. Recipes and homemaking stuff mostly.
No doubt about it, I love Instagram. What I love most is the ability to quickly publish photos. My usual photo work flow is long. Instagram is just like it says - instant.
I use Twitter mostly to share links to interesting idea posts (vs. visual ones, which go to Pinterest). However, most of my Instagram photos and Pinterest pins go to Twitter also. It's a bit of a catch all.
I've had a Goodreads account for ages and used to use it mostly for homeschool purposes, keeping track of the books we read. Now I use it as a library for my own reading. One of my favorite parts of Goodreads is scrolling through what friends are reading to find titles for myself.
While we're discussing social media I wanted to share that Laurent has an Instagram account now. I think he'll be using it mostly to share his art.
He's working on 30 day art project right now. 30 Days of Otters (bet you haven't seen that one yet).
He asked me to share this with you so he could get a few more followers (smile). He's the only kid in our home currently using social media. You can read more about our thoughts on kids and computers here.
Laurent is currently enjoying following other artists and is being inspired by their work. Technology to meet the learner's needs and interests.
I have a Facebook page for my blog too. I also have a personal page, but it's small and I keep it to family and old friends. I have sort of a love/hate relationship with my FB blog page. I didn't really want to do it, but a website-designing friend convinced me that it was a good idea. And I have to say, nothing drives traffic to my blog like FB! Still, I've dragged my feet about putting much into that page, beyond blog updates. I suppose I don't like the notion of sharing content only with FB--but your post here helps me think about it in a different light. I like how your plan is to make FB work for you. You're looking forward to using it as a way of sharing stuff that wouldn't make it to your blog.
Hmmm. Food for thought. Maybe I should get over my FB grudge--and let FB work for me, because it really does bring people to me and my blog. Off to follow your page there. :-)
I have a facebook account and a pinterest account, and that's about all I can handle. I think it's a good thing I don't have a smartphone, because I'd be all over instagram and spend way too much time there. I visit pinterest probably daily, scroll through quickly, and then I'm done. I am on facebook a lot, mostly just having conversations with friends from where I'm from. Right now, as I'm developing few friendships where I am, it helps me feel a bit more connected.

PS-I am loving the otter sketches! We are priveledged to see otters down by the docks near our home every once in awhile...they are quite timid, so that picture is a good shot!
You can also instagram from an ipad. That's what laurent does. I just realized I could follow people on Instagram. I've been using it for one year and finally clued in to that part. I'm not so good at "following" much better at posting my own stuff. Which seems like of one sided.
Renee,
I haven't figured out how to use facebook yet... not sure even that I want/need to. But, how did you go about learning to use it - just playing around or did you find a good source?
Blessings,
Tonya
Tonya, I've been on facebook for years, using a personal account. It's the place online where I keep in touch with my extended family and find out what is happening in our siblings lives and with my nieces and nephews. For my personal facebook I would spend about 1/2 hour every couple weeks - looking at photos etc. So I know how facebook works from that.
As far as using it for my blog - I'm a totaly newbie but Damien enjoys social media and has figured out a few tricks that he is helping with with. Also, in terms of figuring out what/how I want to use Facebook for my blog I have been watching other bloggers and visiting their Facebook sites to see how they do it - what I like and what I don't. But before I started FIMBY Facebook I wanted a very clear purpose for it. And I honestly never had one before our trip this past June. And then it was an ahaa moment of seeing how Facebook could meet a need for me to microblog when publishing posts is too difficult because of time constraints.
We'll see how it evolves. I don't want to get into a time-suck situation with social media, I want to use it wisely and to meet my goals.
Oh Renee, I'm struggling with this one right now! I have a facebook page for my business but social media doesn't come naturally to me. I hardly ever use it personally (but I do like to just scan through and see what old friends are up to and see the baby pics) but I do think it's a great way to reach out with my blog - you've given me some great ideas for how to share more!
Just something else for us to talk about on our chat (smile).
YAY! So glad to see FIMBY on Facebook----I've been using FB for several years, primarily as a way to connect with family and friends on a more regular basis, and I must say, I really enjoy it. I do believe it is important to exercise control over things such as social networking, rather than allow those things to exercise control over us, but having said that, I LOVE being able to connect with my dear friends in South Africa, England, Ireland, and Australia, and my family members who are spread out all over the country.
The internet, like anything media-related, really, can become a source of distraction which, if we allow it, has a way of preventing us from truly living. Although I so enjoy participating in 'conversations' with my dear ones via Facebook, and reading several lovely blogs, there is just no substitute for getting out and about---whether that's sharing dinner with friends or spending a Saturday morning at the Farmers' Market, or hiking one of the many trails in our 'neck of the woods' (I live amongst the Redwoods in California's Humboldt County), or having a family picnic alongside the river, or hunting for shells on the beach, or whale-watching, or blackberry picking with my hubby or simply exploring my own backyard with my 8-month old twin grand-babies. There is just SO MUCH life to be lived to spend too much of it in front of a screen!
Again, so glad you're on Facebook----thank you for inspiring me and bringing joy to my day, Renee.
Beautiful blessings to you and your family!
Patti
My comment is simple... YAY! I check FB daily. It's my guilty pleasure I suppose. Yay, yay, yay!
I don't see anything wrong with checking FB or any other social media, daily or whenever works for you. We all makes choices in our how we spend our time - tv, social activities, crafting, surfing, whatever. I happen to spend many hours a day on the computer writing and creating - I like that. It's all about a person's priorities and how we meet the rest of our life goals in that context.
I liked you on Facebook, followed you on Instagram and followed Laurent on Instagram.
Thank you. We're honored (smile).

I have a personal Facebook page that I look at a couple times a week. I originally got it to keep in touch with hubby's East Coast family. I like to put photos up on it for them, but I don't post too often. I never play games or that stuff on there. I use our https://www.facebook.com/JauntAdventureGear?ref=hl Jaunt Adventure Gear Facebook page almost daily- it is just part of building up our outdoor enthusiasts community and marketing for our store. It can be tiring to follow up on people's comments, but we do.
I love Pinterest for capturing my recipes and classroom teaching ideas. I am new to Twitter and Instagram - still figuring them out.
I think for me, social media used carefully, can be very enriching, but it can be a time-sucker if I'm not careful, especially "surfing" Pinterest. But then we don't have tv, so I don't sit and watch hours of television like some people, I guess I surf the Pinterest world instead sometimes! So that can be some veg-out time for me.
I will enjoy seeing your FB posts when you are not having time to write your long posts. :)
