Two years ago this summer I went through a personal transformation of sorts with regards to our weekly hiking routine. I have always loved being outdoors with my family but that summer, as our practice of one day a week became more serious, what had once been fun and enjoyable became a chore for me.
I wrote personal reflections during that time both here and at ADVENTUREinPROGRESS, but never before has the whole story been put together, until now. Today at Unplugged Sunday I'm sharing how I turned the corner after the hiking "honeymoon" was over.
It's interesting how when I look back on that summer I see a story emerge that wasn't apparent while I was in the midst of living it.
I like that part of personal blogging and journaling. The record of who I was then, the changes and transformations along the way, the lessons I can see clearly now. The ordering and making sense of my life in hindsight. Something I like to do since the day to day can seem rather chaotic and messy.
My "hi, come chat at Unplugged Sunday" face
(we don't cycle very often)
If you'd like to chat about that experience (maybe you've hit the wall also) please do come visit at Unplugged Sunday. I'll be engaging in comments and connecting over there.
As related to adventure and hiking we're hosting another giveaway for an adorable little backpack. There's also some video and other interesting trip tidbits on that post.
Did any of you read Born To Run? If you're a runner you totally should. I'm not a runner but I loved it, so did Celine.
Anyway, at OR we interviewed Barefoot Ted (he's a major "character" in McDougall's book). Damien's known Ted online for years and meeting him was really cool. You can see a video of that interview on Damien's recent post.
Happy Hiking, Barefoot Running, Barefoor Hiking, or whatever it is you like to do. Come visit at Unplugged Sunday. I'll see you there.
Hello Renee. It's been too long since I popped in your blog to say hello. Your photos of Montana and the rest of your trip are very inviting! I am glad you had the opportunity to spend some alone time with your hubby. Here in Houston we are in water restrictions and the air temperature has broken heat records all across the board. Say a little prayer for us! In the meantime, keep posting those beautiful pics with hints of the cool Canadian breezes.
Sincerely, Angela
Born to Run is such a good book - made me want to go running in sandals for miles through the Mexican canyons - or next best option, through the beautiful trails of Nova Scotia. I'm not running barefoot but I've changed to a more minimalist shoe that I love - the Merrell Pace Glove.
Funny that you mentioned Born to Run in this post. My post today highlighted the Tarahumara indians and local restaurant (by the same name) we recently ate at on Isaac's birthday. Saw some authentic indian rubber sandals. Ate some dang good (and vegan) fajitas. All very cool. Loved and was inspired by this intreguing book. Oh, and I just watched Damien's interview with Barefoot Ted. Awesome!

I so enjoyed your post. I have just recently started reading your blog. I am really enjoying it. Our children are grown. Youngest just got married. How I wish we had done something similar to what you are doing. My husband and I have decided to do more hiking ourselves. Maybe someday our grandchildren will go with us!! :)

I'm reading Born to Run right now. I'm quite certain I'd never give up my Asics though!
