Welcoming Fall

I've turned the corner from the transition period of late summer into fall. Truly I can say now I'm joyfully embracing this beautiful season.

I'm choosing to not think about what lies ahead (winter) as I don wool socks and sweaters on the chilly mornings. Instead I'm reveling in the purple asters growing wild on the roadsides, framed by goldenrod and starting-to-turn-red maple leaves. If you've never experienced autumn in New England you really must someday.

Having said that it's ironic that our family is leaving the state for the next week. Damien is headed to the Rocky Mountains to, get this, backpack for seven days in the Teton Wilderness in Wyoming. He's over the moon excited about this trek and has been preparing for weeks. He's going with a guided group and will be learning expedition skills he hopes will help our family as we hike higher and further, following our own adventurous path together.

With Damien gone for the week I decided to take the kids and go visit my parents in Nova Scotia. They are in the process of building a new house so we'll all be camping out together in their thirty foot trailer. Nova Scotia is beautiful and I look forward to hanging out with two of my best friends who adore my kids to pieces and will (sigh) cook for me.

I have a couple posts planned to share this week but for the most part I intend on enjoying my family and welcoming fall.

Lovely photos, Renee. We were fortunate to spend this past weekend in Maine (midcoast and Common Ground!) and oh my--the colors! Truly stunning. Let me know if you happen through my neck of the woods on your way to NS.

Hmm, "adverting" is the wrong verb here, but it seemed right when I typed it, and just now I can't think of the correct English word. Having language issues at the moment!

Oh I know what you mean about your parents help. Mine (mom & stepdad) literally live all the way across the country and hate to fly. But they are coming the end of this week and staying for a week and my mom has offered to take us out to eat at a local food restaurant, wash dishes after dinner, and help me can tomatoes, applesauce, and pears. sigh.

Oh and I made a vegan stew last week with what we had on hand and thought of you. It is very fall in flavors and ingredients so I will share the recipe at ND soon.

Can I just say, that my favourite part of fall, by a long shot, is pumpkins. There is something about them that just send shivers up my spine; the way they feel and smell and taste. I just can't get enough. Thanks for that picture. I love Nova Scotia too. I drove there from SW Ontario about 9 or 10 years back. Cape Breton is just the most beautiful place. We camped on a cliff overlooking the ocean. That does not get old. In fact, we are planning an east coast driving trip next summer. I long to show Issac Hopewell Rocks. The Bay of Fundy is so amazing. And you know...we go right through Maine. :) New England of course is amazing. My favouite part of all the US. Enjoy your holiday back "home."

Enviable trips, both of them! I can't believe in the midst of building their own place, your parents have been able to help with yours in decent sized chunks! Your parents rock. I love your autumn photos. We have just broken a heat wave, so I haven't felt autumn here yet. Nicola

they actually just started building this summer so helping us didn't interfere with their own plans but my dad is a builder by profession. He's always building, somewhere.
